Shock and Awe Michael Ryder Books
The line between reality and video games blurs when a young tycoon invites a mix of celebrities and scientists to his private island for a wild week-end. As a character says early on, nothing is as it seems. This is a big party, an orgy, and the setting for the sale of a deadly organism that has been stolen from a top secret lab. The sale is not via the usual bidding but through an elaborate video game competition. The gamers are among the guests, but of course, they're not revealing their game identities. And someone is trying to kill off the competition - in real life. The hero (a James Bond figure amped up for the 21st century) is Jack Ford. Jack's public persona is out-of-control playboy; his real identity is an agent employed by a shadowy organization on the side of right - not that he isn't also a playboy and womanizer. His partner is a civilian, brought in because she is the world's leading authority on the deadly organism. Let the games begin.
This thriller is also a top-notch mystery with twists and turns that keep you guessing the real-world identity of those gamers until the very end. This is not a book for children or the straight-laced, but I'd recommend it to anyone else.

Shock and Awe Michael Ryder Books Reviews
Fantastic read. I really rooted for the characters and didn't want the book to end. I am looking forward to more about the Special Exploits team.
worth reading.
Shock and Awe
This was an exciting read, with lots of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. Ryder’s writing is crisp and sharp, with some ingenious insights into the lives of the movers and shakers of our world. But Ryder’s true strength lies in his ability to create fascinating, three-dimensional people whom you genuinely care about and want to spend time with. He and his characters introduced me to places and people I know very little about, and I loved accompanying Jack and Lucy as they navigated this intriguing yet treacherous world. I look forward to future adventures with them!
I love a book full of intrigue that captures your attention and keeps you hooked. This book does! The beginning of Shock and Awe is very unusual and thought provoking. The characters are unique and come to life against a mysterious island in the Mediterranean. Michael Ryder is a brilliant author with rare creativity and imagination akin to Stephen King. On the flip side, I don't think the title does it justice. Despite this, I hope the book reaches a broad audience and gets Hollywood's attention. It would make a great movie!
"Shock and Awe" is one HELL of a novel — dark, mysterious, funny, psychological, and sexy as all hell (with queer sensibilities to boot, so you don't have to worry about this being your bog-standard hetero male wish fulfillment). I don't know how he's done it, but Ryder has managed to synthesize all these elements into what "James Bond" wishes it could be. Not only is it a real page-turner, but the thriller/mystery elements genuinely keep you guessing until the last page with twist after twist. I'm not even usually a thriller reader, but this one knocked my dick into my watch pocket. I can't recommend this enough.
The first thing I noticed after reading just a few pages of this book was that I had become irresistible to the opposite sex! At first I was rather flattered, I mean really, 3 times before I could get my key into the ignition in the morning! Women were pawing at the glass, batting goo goo eyes at me and otherwise making a bother of themselves! Drained, but happy, I was delighted that I purchased this novel. Later, I became less enamored of all the attention and began to skulk around. What with all the paternity suits and the constant mound of undergarments blowing across my front yard I began to feel that perhaps I had erred in making this purchase. So, in short, a great read, but unless you're prepared to become a great lover with all the exhaustion that entails, stay away.
I read this book on my daughter's recommendation. I love mysteries and thrillers, and she thought I'd like this new author's debut -- and she was right. I enjoyed the race to find and stop the terrorist, and the love/hate/love relationship between Jack and Lucy. Plenty of twists and surprises. I would give it 4.5 stars instead of 5 if I could, only because the game and the brief bit with the zombies wasn't exactly my cup of tea -- maybe it's a generational thing. But all-in-all, a fun, fast-paced read that was perfect for my recent cruise vacation.
